COURSE CURRICULUM
The Game Art course is structured to progressively develop students’ creative, technical, and analytical skills essential for the games industry. In Year 1, students begin with Game Art Fundamentals 1, gaining a foundational understanding of observational drawing, 2D digital design, and introductory 3D skills, alongside contextual studies that build reflective and theoretical awareness. Game Art Fundamentals 2 builds upon this with more focus on idea generation and design iteration for 3D assets, while continuing the development of both technical and analytical skills. Game Art Essentials 1 introduces students to the basic pipeline of creating 3D game-ready assets including concepting, texturing, mesh construction, and implementation in game engines, with an emphasis on aesthetics and creative decision-making. Game Art Essentials 2 advances this pipeline knowledge, introducing physically based rendering workflows and non-destructive methods. Year 2 begins with Intermediate Game Art Principles 1 and 2, which develop more advanced 2D and 3D techniques, particularly in character creation, while deepening understanding of industry practices through critical analysis and reflective writing. In Blocks 3 and 4, the Group Project modules simulate real-world development environments, guiding students through pre-production and production phases of game asset creation, fostering teamwork, iterative design, and technical execution. In the final year, students work on industry briefs in Professional Practice 1 and 2, refining their specialisms and preparing for employment. These modules support the development of professional portfolios and include contextual studies that encourage deep critical reflection and industry research. Personal Project: Planning and Pre-Production enables students to conceptualise and begin their own major project, tailored to their individual artistic interests and career goals. This culminates in Personal Project: Production, a final module where students realise a substantial body of work that demonstrates their technical expertise, creativity, and readiness for the professional world, forming a key part of their industry-standard portfolio.
