COURSE CURRICULUM

The Footwear Design program offers a comprehensive and evolving learning journey that equips students with both creative and technical skills for careers in design. In the first year, Block 1, *Design Fundamentals*, introduces key visual communication techniques such as illustration, schematic drawing, material sourcing, and market research, all arranged to build gradually upon one another. In Block 2, *Design Exploration*, students begin to develop patterns for a variety of shoe styles, learning essential 2D and 3D translation methods and compiling a technical reference file. Alongside hands-on work, students also explore critical studies, researching designers and industry context. Block 3, *Design Development*, builds on this foundation by introducing footwear manufacturing processes and pattern development, helping transition from design concepts to prototypes. Block 4, *Futures – Design, Culture and Responsibility*, shifts focus towards collaboration, innovation, and global challenges, with an emphasis on responsible design aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. In the second year, Block 1, *Bespoke Principles*, covers the craft and precision of custom footwear, including orthopaedic and performance-based design, often with professional feedback and visits to production units. Block 2, *Communicate – Professional Practices*, sharpens students’ ability to present their work to various audiences while also supporting career-readiness through CV writing, internship preparation, and discussion of ethical design practices. In Block 3, *Design Innovations*, students focus on athletic and performance markets, integrating biomechanics theory and gaining industry feedback. Block 4, *Concept Realisation*, provides the freedom to execute a self-initiated project informed by market research and advanced 3D and digital workshops. In the final year, Block 1, *Conceptual Inquiry*, deepens students’ personal design direction with technical experimentation and conceptual exploration. Block 2, *Creative Realisation*, continues this momentum with a co-created brief and encourages entry into global design competitions. Finally, Blocks 3 and 4, *Design Resolution*, focus on culminating self-directed projects, where design outcomes are closely tied to theoretical insights. Students produce a final collection and written component, synthesising research, creativity, and cultural understanding to prepare for graduation and industry entry.
