COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature degree provides a rich and varied exploration of literary texts, critical theory, and cultural history, while also developing essential academic and professional skills. In the first year, students begin with modules like Introduction to the Novel, where they learn to analyse narrative techniques, subgenres, and narrative perspectives, building on previous reading experience. Journeys and Places allows students to examine literature through the themes of movement, identity, and space, engaging with global and interdisciplinary ideas. Introduction to Drama: Shakespeare offers insight into early modern theatre and its ongoing cultural relevance, while alternative routes such as film studies, journalism, or history provide opportunities to tailor the degree to individual interests. The year concludes with Poetry and Society, where students refine close reading skills and explore the relationship between poetic form and historical context. In the second year, Exploration and Innovation introduces medieval and early modern literature, encouraging students to analyse texts in relation to themes like power, faith, and sexuality. Romantic and Victorian Literature continues the historical journey, focusing on the novel and poetry within the context of major social changes. Modules like Screen and Literary Adaptations of the Classics and Exploring Work and Society help students apply their literary skills in contemporary and professional settings. In the third year, students undertake a year-long dissertation, developing an independent research project with academic support and theoretical grounding. Print and Digital Revolutions explores the cultural impact of print and digital technologies, while World Englishes examines English literature in postcolonial and global contexts. Students can also continue their chosen route from previous years. The degree concludes with Modernism and Magazines, focusing on literary innovation and the role of magazines in early twentieth-century culture. Across three years, students gain analytical, communication, and research skills that prepare them for a wide range of careers.
