In Year 1, the focus is on developing foundational skills in literary analysis. The Introduction to the Novel module aims to sharpen critical reading abilities and introduces students to various narrative techniques, subgenres, and the application of literary criticism. The Journeys and Places module explores the global use of English, considering issues like mobility, gender, sustainability, and belonging through interdisciplinary approaches. Childhood, Social Justice, and Education addresses contemporary debates around childhood and inequalities, while Poetry and Society focuses on the historical context of poetic forms and genres. In Year 2, Exploration and Innovation: Medieval to Early Modern Literature introduces students to English literature from the medieval and early modern periods, exploring key themes such as power, faith, and sexuality. The Exploring Work and Society module prepares students for professional environments by focusing on transferable skills, with a focus on issues like race, gender, and sustainability. The optional module Cultural and Technological Transformations examines the impact of technology on education and its potential for inclusivity. Romantic and Victorian Literature explores the social upheavals of the Romantic and Victorian periods, analyzing texts by authors such as Wordsworth, Austen, Dickens, and Hardy. In the final year, the Dissertation module allows students to conduct independent research on a topic of their choice, with workshops on research skills and writing. Print and Digital Revolutions examines the impact of the printing press and digital technologies on writing and reading.
