COURSE CURRICULUM

The Theatre and Performance program is structured to develop students' practical skills, theoretical understanding, and artistic independence over three years. In the first year, students explore foundational performance techniques through modules like Body, Text, Voice and Participations, which focus on expressive performance and socially engaged theatre. They also choose an interdisciplinary route in Block 3 and finish the year with a collaborative group performance in Theatre Company: Ensemble. In year two, students advance their creative voices with modules such as Engaging Audiences and Making Theatre and Performance, where they experiment with audience interaction and original performance creation. The Revolutions module introduces historical movements in acting and directing, or students may continue a specialist route begun in year one, including options like Creative Writing, Education, English Literature, Film, History, Journalism, or Media. The year concludes with either a full group production in Theatre Company: Collaboration or a public performance via Professional Performance Practice 1. In the final year, students tailor their studies further by selecting two modules from a diverse list, such as Live Art, Staging Texts, Theatre Company: Production, Education and Performing Arts, or Revolutions: Performance, Identity and Activism. Specialist pathways continue to be available, including Creative Writing, Gender and Education, World Englishes, British Cinema, and others. The final block is dedicated to a significant individual project or a public performance following a successful audition for Professional Performance Practice 2. Assessments throughout the program are varied, including performances, essays, creative portfolios, presentations, and reflective documents. Altogether, the program blends rigorous academic exploration with professional practice, enabling students to graduate as confident, critically engaged, and creatively agile practitioners ready for a range of careers in the arts, education, or related sectors.
