COURSE CURRICULUM
The Criminology with Psychology program is designed to develop a strong foundation in both disciplines while encouraging students to think critically and creatively about crime, justice, and human behaviour. In the first year, students are introduced to essential academic skills through the Studying at University module, learning how to engage with academic sources, present their ideas, and work collaboratively. Principles of Social Research introduces students to ethical research practices, critical thinking, and how philosophical worldviews influence criminological understanding. The Applied Psychology module provides an overview of five core areas—biological, cognitive, developmental, personality, and social psychology—laying the groundwork for understanding human behaviour in relation to crime. Journeys Through Justice familiarises students with the criminal justice system, exploring institutions such as the police, prisons, courts, and probation services, and questioning how justice is delivered and experienced. In the second year, students explore core criminological theories in Explaining Criminological Issues, linking these to real-world issues involving harm, victimisation, and justice. Communities of Justice builds on previous learning by examining debates around punishment, rehabilitation, and the impact of race, gender, and power on justice systems. The Researching Justice Journeys module deepens students' understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods, preparing them for independent research. In the final year, students begin Planning Social Research, developing research questions and ethical frameworks for their final projects. Justice in a Globalised World challenges students to understand crime and justice in an international context, focusing on global harms and transnational responses. Students also choose two optional psychology modules to further personalise their studies. The program culminates in a final project where students apply their knowledge in an extended essay, empirical research, or social activism project. This degree provides a multidisciplinary approach that prepares students for a wide range of careers within and beyond the criminal justice system.
