COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of this Creative Writing program, students begin by immersing themselves in short-form writing through the exploration of poetic forms from various cultures such as the sonnet, ghazal, and sestina, alongside free verse, flash fiction, and historical flash fiction. The integration of real-world writing practices, including review writing and digital storytelling on social media, enhances employability while promoting clarity, conciseness, and the discipline of editing. Students learn through peer feedback and workshops that build their confidence and consolidate their skills for submission. In the second block, the focus shifts to journeys and places, encouraging students to consider themes like belonging, identity, and sustainability through an interdisciplinary approach that connects creative writing with wider humanistic ideas. The third module, Multimodal Writing, introduces the relationship between traditional texts and digital innovation. Students explore global literature and engage with collaborative writers' salons, where they lead discussions and devise creative activities. The year concludes with a year-long module, Shaping Ideas, which helps students develop their own creative projects and understand the full writing process through planning, feedback, and reflection. Moving into the second year, students explore Writing Identity, a module that delves into self-representation, memory, and ethics. This leads into Exploring Work and Society, which prepares students for life after university by examining workplace dynamics and encouraging reflection on sustainability and equity. In the third module, Story Craft, students study narrative across mediums, deepening their knowledge of character, structure, and storytelling techniques. Word, Image, Sound completes the year by examining how multimedia forms like poetry films, graphic novels, and podcasts can shape narrative. In the final year, students focus on digital forms in Screentime, learning to write for podcasts, social media, and film. Writing and Publishing offers insights into global publishing trends and entrepreneurship. Uncreative Writing challenges traditional views on originality through play and experimentation, and the Dissertation module allows students to complete a long-form creative project supported by feedback and critical reflection. Throughout the program, students gain not only creative writing expertise but also professional skills that prepare them for diverse careers in writing, media, and education.
