COURSE CURRICULUM
This creative writing course offers a well-rounded and thoughtfully designed pathway for developing both practical writing skills and critical awareness. In the first year, students explore a wide variety of short-form writing, from traditional poetic forms like the sonnet and villanelle to modern styles such as flash fiction and social media writing. There's a strong emphasis on editing, redrafting, and peer feedback, helping students build confidence and clarity in their work. The integration of ethical considerations in historical fiction adds depth to the creative process. The second block introduces interdisciplinary concepts through the theme of journeys and places, encouraging students to think beyond literary boundaries. Topics such as sustainability, mobility, and identity are examined alongside creative responses. Blocks three and four provide a solid foundation in social justice and personal project development, which supports independent thinking and writing. In the second year, the course shifts focus to writing identity, work, and society. Students reflect on their own identities and how these shape their writing, while also preparing for professional environments and real-world briefs. Optional modules in block three offer tailored exploration, whether in education, wellbeing, or technology. The year-long module, Word, Image, Sound, opens up creative experimentation with multi-modal storytelling. In the final year, students tackle screen-based writing and gain insight into the global writing and publishing industry, including topics like self-publishing and digital marketing. Block three offers further specialisation through modules on curriculum design, teaching practice, or gender and education. The final dissertation allows students to develop a substantial piece of original work supported by critical reflection and consistent feedback. The course as a whole balances creative practice with academic inquiry and professional preparation, enabling students to explore their voice while gaining skills that are adaptable to a wide range of creative and educational careers.
