COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Welding Engineering at Cranfield University includes a comprehensive suite of compulsory modules designed to build expertise in welding technology, metallurgy, materials, design, and quality assurance. The program begins with Introduction to Materials, where students gain the ability to analyse material structures and understand how processing influences mechanical properties, particularly in steels and corrosion-resistant alloys. The Welding Metallurgy module provides insights into the microstructural evolution during welding, exploring welding of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, dissimilar metal joining, and surface cladding, with a strong focus on phase formation and defect prevention. Welding Processes and Equipment introduces core welding techniques, including TIG, MIG, MMA, submerged arc, and electron beam welding, along with cutting, brazing, and pre- and post-weld treatments. The Advanced Welding Processes module focuses on recent innovations such as laser welding, additive manufacturing, friction welding, and underwater welding, emphasizing process selection, performance, and safety. Welding Systems and Research Methods equips students with knowledge in robotic welding, sensors, software, and experimental design, while also addressing cost estimation, automation planning, and sustainable manufacturing. The Management of Weld Quality module covers essential standards (ISO, EN, AWS, ASME), welding procedure qualifications, non-destructive examination methods like ultrasonic and radiographic inspection, and health and safety practices. Throughout the course, students engage in practical work, case studies, and lab-based learning to deepen their understanding.
