COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Safety and Human Factors in Aviation offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip students with the technical knowledge and practical skills required to address safety challenges and human performance issues in the aviation industry. Core modules such as Aviation Safety Management introduce the fundamentals of Safety Management Systems (SMS), hazard identification, and risk management techniques in line with ICAO guidelines. Human Error and System Safety explores the classification of error types and the application of system safety methods like Functional Resonance Analysis and STPA. Human-Computer Interaction in Aviation addresses pilot performance, cockpit design, and automation challenges, while Cognitive Ergonomics delves into psychological factors such as mental workload and situation awareness, with practical assessment methods. The Safety Assessment of Aircraft Systems module familiarizes students with safety analysis tools like Fault Tree Analysis, FMEA, and Zonal Safety Analysis, along with regulatory frameworks such as FAR and EASA standards. The Applied Safety Assessment module builds on this knowledge by engaging students in hands-on group projects involving real-world system safety evaluations. Research Methods develops competency in both qualitative and quantitative approaches for human factors research. The Aircraft Accident Investigation and Response module provides experience in managing accident scenarios, evidence analysis, interviewing, and preparing safety recommendations. The Capstone Project enables students to simulate industrial problem-solving in safety and human factors. Two electives allow further specialization, such as Flight Data Monitoring, which teaches the setup and analysis of FDM systems, and Human Factors in Aviation Maintenance, focusing on error management systems and regulatory compliance in both civil and military environments. Together, these modules prepare graduates to contribute to the safe and effective operation of aviation systems, ensuring human factors and system safety are prioritized in design, operations, and maintenance. This course is ideal for those aspiring to safety management, investigation, or human factors roles within the aviation sector.
