COURSE CURRICULUM

The Guided Weapon Systems MSc at Cranfield provides advanced training in the theory, design, and integration of modern guided weapon systems across land, sea, and air domains. The program begins with foundational studies covering essential terminology, mathematics, computational tools, and introductory missile concepts. Core modules then develop expertise in propulsion, aerodynamics, control theory, guidance, electro-optics, radar, power electronics, energetics, materials, structures, and systems integration. Students learn the principles of rocket and air-breathing propulsion, subsonic and supersonic aerodynamics, missile autopilot and guidance design, sensor technologies including EO/IR and radar, and the selection of warheads, fuzes, and propellants to meet operational requirements. Emphasis is placed on system-of-systems thinking, including integration challenges, platform compatibility, performance assessment, and safety considerations. Laboratory work, simulations, and project-based exercises reinforce practical understanding, while elective modules such as electronic warfare or hypersonic guided weapons allow students to specialise in emerging areas. By the end of the program, graduates are able to analyse and evaluate complex guided weapon subsystems, assess performance trade-offs, design missile systems to meet specified operational requirements, and integrate these systems safely and effectively within multi-domain military platforms, equipping them for careers in defence, aerospace, and related high-technology sectors.
