COURSE CURRICULUM

The Gas Turbine Technology option within the MSc in Thermal Power and Propulsion provides students with an in-depth understanding of gas turbine design, performance, and operation across aerospace, marine, and industrial applications. Core modules cover gas turbine performance, simulation, and diagnostics, equipping students with the skills to evaluate engine components, assess degradation, and model performance using advanced software tools such as TURBOMATCH and PYTHIA. Mechanical design of turbomachinery is studied in detail, focusing on stresses, vibrations, creep and fatigue, and component lifing, while turbomachinery and blade cooling explores aerodynamic design, heat transfer, and advanced cooling methods. Combustor modules develop knowledge of combustion principles, emissions control, heat transfer, and computational modeling for gas turbine and afterburner systems. Engine systems training emphasizes technical reporting, systematic analysis, and integration of engine components, complemented by management for technology, which builds leadership, teamwork, and commercial awareness in technological contexts. Additional modules cover gas turbine operations and rotating machines, marine propulsion system integration, propulsion systems performance and integration for aircraft, and computational fluid dynamics for turbomachinery. Elective options, such as jet engine control, allow students to explore specialised areas of propulsion. This program equips graduates with both technical and professional skills, preparing them for careers in design, research, operation, and management of advanced propulsion systems in diverse engineering sectors.
