COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Future Food Sustainability program at Cranfield University includes a series of compulsory modules designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to develop sustainable and resilient food systems. The Principles of Sustainability module introduces key global frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals, Natural Capital, Ecosystem Services, Planetary Boundaries, and the Circular Economy, helping students understand how these can be applied to address complex environmental, economic, and social challenges. Technologies for Seeds and Crop Protection focuses on crop breeding strategies, seed technologies, agrochemicals, biocontrol methods, and genetic modification, offering insight into their role in ensuring food security. The Soil Systems module explores the science behind soil health, functions, and ecosystem services, emphasizing the impact of land management and regenerative agriculture on sustainable food production. Food Chain Resilience addresses supply chain management with a focus on sustainability, circular systems, risk mitigation, procurement strategies, and the integration of Industry 4.0 technologies to improve performance and resilience. Agricultural Informatics introduces data-driven decision-making using sensors, GIS, and big data analysis to monitor and manage agricultural environments, while also considering the social and technological barriers to adoption. Sustainability and Environmental Assessment provides tools such as life cycle analysis, carbon footprinting, and environmental impact assessments to evaluate and enhance the sustainability of technologies and processes. Water and Sustainable Agrifood Systems examines the critical role of water in agriculture, evaluating irrigation systems, water footprinting, climate risks, and strategies for improving water use efficiency and resilience in crop and livestock production. Together, these modules offer an interdisciplinary approach combining science, technology, and strategic thinking. They prepare students to critically assess, innovate, and lead efforts in transforming global food systems to be more sustainable, equitable, and capable of adapting to future challenges, contributing meaningfully to food security and environmental stewardship worldwide.
