COURSE CURRICULUM

The Forensic Science course is designed to equip students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for careers in forensic investigation. It begins with Introductory Studies, which, though optional and non-credit bearing, prepares students by revisiting fundamentals such as chemistry, statistics, computing services, health and safety, and research methods. Core modules include Investigation and Evidence Collection, which explores crime scene procedures, evidence handling, and scene photography. Reasoning for Forensic Science focuses on interpreting data, constructing arguments, and applying statistical reasoning including Bayes’ Theorem. Analytical Techniques introduces methods like XRD, SEM, FTIR, mass spectrometry, DNA analysis, and isotope analysis for forensic investigations. The Courtroom Skills module prepares students for the legal responsibilities of expert witnesses, emphasizing report writing and courtroom communication. Advanced Crime Scene Investigation builds on earlier skills with post-mortem analysis, advanced photography, and evidence dissemination. The Thesis Research Project allows students to undertake a significant independent investigation, applying project planning, risk assessment, and research methodologies. Elective modules offer specialization in areas such as Explosives Investigation, Firearms Ballistics, Trace Evidence, Forensic Archaeology, Anthropology, Digital Forensics, and more. Modules like Forensic Ecology and Hazardous Forensics address environmental and CBRN-related crimes. Students may also study Fire Investigation, DNA Analysis, Radiographic Imaging, Bloodstain Pattern Analysis, and Trauma Weapon Effects. Additional electives such as Mass Fatality Incidents, Temporary Mortuary Operations, and Forensic Imaging offer practical training in disaster victim identification, mortuary setup, and forensic documentation. Across these modules, students gain competencies in evidence recovery, experimental design, analytical interpretation, legal reporting, and presentation of findings. By combining theoretical foundations with hands-on practice and courtroom training, the course fosters scientific rigor, critical thinking, and legal awareness. Graduates are equipped to operate effectively within multi-disciplinary investigative teams in forensic science, criminal justice, disaster response, or research sectors.
