COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Forensic Science is a comprehensive program combining core theoretical principles with extensive practical training. The course begins with an optional, zero-credit Introductory Studies module, which equips students with foundational knowledge in chemistry, maths, study skills, computing, research ethics, and health and safety. Core modules include Investigation and Evidence Collection, which covers crime scene processing and evidence recovery under UK legal constraints, and Reasoning for Forensic Science, which focuses on critical evaluation, experimental design, and statistics, including Bayes’ Theorem. Analytical Techniques introduces the application of various laboratory methods such as XRD, SEM, FTIR, GC-MS, and DNA analysis. Courtroom Skills explores the role of expert witnesses, legal frameworks, and effective courtroom communication. Forensic Archaeology is addressed in two stages: the recovery of buried remains and mass grave excavation, offering hands-on experience in excavation, grave interpretation, and documentation. Anthropology modules range from osteology—covering skeletal identification and biological profiling—to advanced topics in trauma and pathology for positive identification. The Thesis Research Project allows for independent research into an area of interest, incorporating experimental design, data analysis, and academic reporting. Elective modules allow students to tailor their learning. Options include Trace Evidence, Firearms Investigation, Fire Investigation, Digital Scene Forensics, Radiographic Investigations, Forensic Ecology, DNA analysis, Bloodstain Pattern Analysis, Forensic Imaging, Hazardous Forensics, Forensic Exploitation and Intelligence, Mass Fatality Incidents, Temporary Mortuary Operations, and Trauma Weapon Effects. Other electives like Practical Archaeological Excavation and modules focused on heritage crime offer applied, field-based learning. Each module has clearly defined learning outcomes, ensuring students develop critical thinking, practical application, and reporting skills across forensic disciplines. This MSc prepares graduates for professional roles in forensic science, law enforcement, disaster response, and heritage crime investigation, fostering both scientific rigour and investigative competence.
