COURSE CURRICULUM

The Explosives Ordnance Engineering MSc provides comprehensive training in the theory, design, application, and management of explosives, munitions, and ordnance systems. The course begins with foundational modules covering the principles of explosives engineering, including initiation mechanisms, detonation and deflagration, primary and secondary explosives, and safety, environmental, and legislative considerations. Students develop research skills tailored to EOE, learning scientific search techniques, experimental design, computer modelling, and critical evaluation. Modules on munitions and target response explore warhead and ammunition design, armour, fragmentation, penetration, blast effects, and human vulnerability. Future developments in EOE are considered through analysis of emerging technologies such as nanotechnology, insensitive munitions, and environmental initiatives. The program includes a research thesis, allowing students to apply their knowledge to practical problems, conduct experiments, analyse results, and present findings in written and oral formats. Elective modules allow specialisation in areas such as gun propellants, pyrotechnics, rocket motors, underwater munitions, safety assurance, counter-IED capabilities, delivery systems, environmental impacts, design for vulnerability, and weapon life assessment. Throughout, students gain skills in teamwork, project management, critical analysis, and application of scientific and engineering principles, preparing them for careers in military, industrial, and civilian sectors that require expertise in explosives, safety, and ordnance engineering.
