COURSE CURRICULUM

The Defence Simulation and Modelling MSc provides a comprehensive set of modules that build the knowledge and practical skills required to design, apply and manage modelling and simulation technologies for defence environments. The program begins with Introductory Studies, covering essential mathematics, computing, study skills and research tools. Foundations of Modelling and Simulation introduces key concepts and defence applications, followed by modules exploring acquisition processes, verification, validation and a range of simulation techniques including discrete event simulation, system dynamics, big data analytics and artificial intelligence. Students examine real-time graphics and learn to develop 3D models for synthetic environments, before progressing to War Gaming and Combat Modelling, studying techniques such as Monte Carlo simulations and Lanchester equations. Further modules explore Synthetic Environments, virtual and extended reality technologies, and networked and distributed simulation systems including interoperability standards such as HLA and DIS. Students develop skills in simulation experimentation design, statistical analysis, and weapon system performance assessment, focusing on operational research methods and cost-effectiveness evaluation. Three advanced modules allow specialised individual research, and the Networked and Distributed Simulation Exercise gives practical group experience in building and running a distributed battlespace environment. The program concludes with a thesis, integrating theoretical and applied learning to address a real defence modelling or simulation challenge.
