COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Engineering comprises a comprehensive set of compulsory modules designed to develop advanced expertise across key areas of intelligent transport systems. The Vehicle Design, Propulsion and Performance module equips students with a deep understanding of propulsion technologies, driveline systems, vehicle performance analysis, legislative compliance, and safety systems. The Human Factors, Human-Computer Interaction and ADAS Systems module focuses on human limitations, trust, perception, behavioural adaptation, and the design of ADAS and autonomous technologies. In Sensors, Perception and Visualisation, students learn about sensor technologies, AI algorithms, sensor fusion, and the performance evaluation of autonomous vehicle perception systems. The Technology Strategy and Business Models module explores innovation, customer-centric design, and organisational culture required for strategic technology deployment. Transport System Optimisation introduces advanced optimisation techniques, traffic flow theory, and electrified transport system efficiency. Ethics, Safety and Regulation addresses ethical reasoning, safety frameworks, governance, and regulatory challenges specific to connected and autonomous vehicles. Embedded Vehicle Control Systems delves into automotive control architectures, network technologies, software-in-the-loop validation, functional safety, and the use of ISO26262 and AUTOSAR standards. Path Planning, Autonomy and Decision Making covers algorithms for planning, navigation, and real-time decision-making, including SLAM and satellite navigation. Networked Systems and Cybersecurity explores vehicle communication protocols, potential cyber vulnerabilities, and best practices for securing internal and external automotive networks. Together, these modules ensure students gain both technical knowledge and practical insight, equipping them to evaluate and implement state-of-the-art solutions in connected and autonomous vehicle development. Students are trained to understand complex vehicle systems, integrate human-centred design, apply optimisation and control strategies, and ensure safety, ethical compliance, and cybersecurity. This multidisciplinary approach prepares graduates for roles in automotive design, research, systems engineering, and regulatory and strategic leadership in the fast-evolving autonomous mobility sector.
