COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Thermal Power and Propulsion, Aerospace Propulsion option, offers a comprehensive and applied study of gas turbine and propulsion system design, performance, and management. The Gas Turbine Performance, Simulation and Diagnostics module equips students to analyse turbojet, turbofan, and turboshaft engines, perform performance calculations, simulate transient behaviour, and assess the impact of degradation and faults using software tools such as TURBOMATCH and PYTHIA. Mechanical Design of Turbomachinery focuses on understanding loads, stresses, failure mechanisms, vibration, creep, and fatigue in rotating components, enabling safe and reliable design. Turbomachinery and Blade Cooling covers compressor and turbine aerodynamic performance, heat transfer principles, blade cooling methods including convection, impingement, film, transpiration, and liquid cooling, integrating theoretical and practical approaches. The Combustors module introduces gas turbine combustor design, operation, fuel selection, heat transfer, cooling, emissions, and the application of computational methods and afterburners. Engine Systems develops understanding of auxiliary systems, component technologies, and engine design for both aero and stationary gas turbines, with practical experience through the Systems Symposium, technical reporting, and collaborative presentations. Management for Technology enhances skills in leadership, teamwork, strategy, marketing, finance, product development, negotiation, and communication in technological organisations. Collectively, these modules equip graduates with advanced technical, analytical, and professional capabilities to design, evaluate, and integrate propulsion systems and contribute effectively to aerospace engineering and technology management roles.
