COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Advanced Materials: Engineering and Industrial Applications includes a range of compulsory modules designed to build specialist knowledge in material behaviour, processing, sustainability and advanced design. Industrial Applications of Advanced Materials introduces the mechanical and physical behaviours of materials and links them to real industrial uses, reinforced by case studies and sustainability considerations. Advanced Materials Processing Technologies explores manufacturing methods, from casting and extrusion to additive manufacturing and photolithography, emphasising the relationship between processing, microstructure and performance. Materials Selection and Design develops the ability to choose appropriate materials for engineering applications, covering polymers, metals, alloys and ceramics, while incorporating sustainability tools such as eco-audit and life cycle analysis. Engineering with Nano and Functional Materials introduces developments in nanoscience and a wide range of nanomaterials, examining opportunities and challenges in their use for multifunctional technologies. Composites Design, Manufacturing and Applications focuses on composite material types, design approaches and production techniques including high-rate automated manufacturing and recycling. Materials for a Net Zero Future investigates environmentally responsible strategies for material use, life cycle assessment, renewable energy technologies and carbon reduction. Together, these modules prepare students to apply advanced materials knowledge to industrial innovation and future engineering challenges.
