COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc program in Lightweight and Composite Structures comprises a comprehensive set of compulsory modules that provide a strong foundation in structural mechanics, materials science, numerical simulation, and failure analysis, with a specific focus on sustainability and lightweight design. The Introduction to Continuum Mechanics module delivers essential knowledge on deformation and stress analysis, using vectors, tensors, and conservation laws, enabling students to analyse structural components under complex loads. Advanced Composite Analysis and Impact develops expertise in fibre-reinforced polymer composites, micromechanics, laminate theory, and failure modes, supporting structural design and performance evaluation. Thin-walled Structures introduces classical stress analysis techniques for torsion, shear, and bending, emphasizing buckling and warping in lightweight components. The Finite Element Methods module offers a detailed understanding of the direct stiffness method and development of 2D and 3D element equations, helping students model, solve, and interpret finite element simulations. Materials Characterisation and Failure Simulations focuses on extracting and applying reliable material properties for composites and metals in simulations, linking experimental data to material models. The Structural Stability module explores analytical and numerical approaches to buckling and post-buckling behaviour in thin plates and stiffened panels, using methods such as Rayleigh-Ritz and Galerkin's. Advanced Simulation for Impact addresses non-linear finite element modelling, strain-rate dependent materials, and dynamic failure, integrating techniques like cohesive zone modelling, meshless methods, and explicit solvers to simulate high-strain-rate events such as impact and crash scenarios. These modules collectively equip students with the ability to design, simulate, and validate high-performance, lightweight structures, addressing both industry demands and environmental challenges. Through theoretical learning, hands-on simulations, and practical workshops, the course ensures graduates are capable of driving innovation in sectors such as aerospace, automotive, marine, and renewable energy, contributing to the development of efficient, safe, and sustainable engineering solutions.
