ABOUT UNIVERSITY
Cranfield University is a postgraduate-only public research institution in the United Kingdom, known for its focus on science, engineering, design, technology, and management. The university began in 1946 as the College of Aeronautics, established on the former RAF Cranfield airbase. During the 1950s and 60s, the institution expanded its focus beyond aeronautics to include manufacturing and management, leading to the creation of the Cranfield School of Management in 1967. By 1969, the college was renamed the Cranfield Institute of Technology, granted a royal charter, and obtained the authority to award degrees. In 1993, it adopted its current name, Cranfield University. The university operates primarily from its main campus in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, and a second campus at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom in Shrivenham, Oxfordshire. Uniquely, the main campus has its own airport and aircraft, used for research and teaching. The development of the university was significantly influenced by Roxbee Cox, later Lord Kings Norton, who was instrumental in its early governance and its transformation into a university. In 1975, the National College of Agricultural Engineering at Silsoe merged with Cranfield, becoming Silsoe College. The university formed an academic partnership in 1984 with the Royal Military College of Science, which later became part of Cranfield Defence and Security. Cranfield became exclusively postgraduate in 2003. In 2007, it launched an international campus in Adelaide, Australia, offering postgraduate programs in defence, but it closed in 2010 due to low enrolment. In 2009, the university closed Silsoe College, moving its programs to the main campus. Today, Cranfield University remains a leader in advanced research and education, serving as a key institution for postgraduate study and professional development.
