COURSE CURRICULUM

The course in Advanced Structural Engineering offers an in-depth understanding of various aspects of structural design and analysis. The Advanced Analysis of Structures module builds upon foundational knowledge in structural mechanics and numerical methods, focusing on material failure and structural analysis using advanced software and computer modeling techniques. The Dynamic Analysis and Design of Structures module further explores structural dynamic analysis, especially related to earthquake engineering, seismic design, and the computational methods used in analyzing structural vibrations. The Advanced Structural Design module emphasizes practical applications in designing steel connections, composite structures, and prestressed members according to Eurocodes, while also introducing the concepts of structural robustness and building stability. In the Geotechnics and Materials module, students enhance their technical skills in solving soil-structure interaction problems and explore sustainable materials, emerging technologies like AI and BIM, and techniques such as 3D concrete printing. Students will also learn to apply life cycle and carbon assessments in infrastructure. The Research Project Structures module is a significant part of the course, where students develop research skills by independently planning and conducting projects in areas like engineering, construction, and sustainability. They will be guided by academic supervisors and have access to specialist labs. The module focuses on research design, data collection, analysis, and effective communication, helping students improve their project management and report-writing skills. Students will explore a range of topics, such as human-structure interaction in long-span structures and the fire performance of concrete buildings, allowing them to gain expertise in both theoretical and practical aspects of structural engineering.
