COURSE CURRICULUM

This course is structured around five compulsory modules that explore key areas in sustainability, safety, economics, systems, and research within the energy industry. Environmental Sustainability in the Energy Industry examines the environmental impact of the oil and gas value chain, focusing on pollution and emissions through case studies and practical software tools like webGNOME and GREET. The module also looks at the potential for repurposing decommissioned infrastructure into sustainable projects, such as biodiversity-focused initiatives like Rigs-to-Reef. Health, Safety, Risk and Project Management Systems provides a foundation in workplace safety and risk management. It includes training in hazard identification, regulatory compliance, risk assessments and control measures, as well as project planning and execution using widely accepted management frameworks. Energy Economics, Investment and Carbon Trading introduces microeconomic concepts in the context of energy, covering topics like energy demand, supply, and market structures. It also explores the role of carbon markets, emissions accounting, and investment strategies in both renewable and non-renewable sectors, helping you understand how financial decisions shape environmental outcomes. Global Energy Systems and Transitions focuses on the global shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy, examining energy production, distribution, and consumption patterns. You’ll analyse existing and future energy systems, and use modelling techniques to evaluate technological and policy options for transitioning to low-carbon energy sources. The Research Project allows you to conduct an independent investigation in your chosen area, such as sustainability, engineering or energy systems. Working under academic supervision, you will explore a research problem from concept to conclusion, developing skills in project design, data analysis, technical writing and academic presentation.
