COURSE CURRICULUM
This Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV) course is designed to prepare students for the evolving challenges in automotive innovation, with a particular focus on autonomous systems, vehicle safety, powertrain efficiency, and cybersecurity. The course blends engineering, data, and human factors to develop a comprehensive understanding of CAV technologies.The module on Cybersecurity, Verification and Validation explores the software and hardware threats facing CAVs. It covers key topics like threat intelligence, data protection, and system testing, ensuring students understand both technical and regulatory challenges of securing modern vehicles.CAV Safety and Human Factors focuses on user interaction and safety in autonomous environments. Students learn about the human-machine interface and how safety integrates into vehicle and system design, especially as responsibility shifts from human drivers to machine intelligence.CAV Dynamics and Optimisation introduces students to the fundamental mechanics of vehicle movement and behaviour. It covers key concepts such as ride comfort, handling, and structural safety. Tyres, suspension systems, and other dynamics components are studied in detail to understand how they affect the overall performance of autonomous vehicles.Powertrain Electrification and Thermal Management focuses on energy efficiency and system performance. The module explores modern and emerging electric powertrain systems, thermal management solutions, and related safety standards, equipping students with practical knowledge for real-world CAV applications.The final Individual Project allows students to apply what they’ve learned to a significant technical challenge, often in partnership with industry or research teams. This project is designed to build independent research, critical thinking, and project management skills.Upon completion, graduates are equipped with specialist expertise in areas like vehicle autonomy, electrification, system validation, and human-centered design—making them strong candidates for roles in future automotive engineering and technology innovation.
