COURSE CURRICULUM

The Forensic Psychology and Mental Health MSc is structured around a set of modules that provide both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for working in forensic mental health settings. Forensic Mental Health and The Criminal Justice System introduces the role of psychology within legal and correctional environments, examining how mental health issues intersect with criminal behaviour and justice processes. Professional Practice in Forensic Mental Health focuses on applied skills, ethical practice, and case management, preparing students to work effectively with offenders facing mental health challenges. Project Planning and Ethics develops the ability to design and plan research or applied projects, emphasising ethical considerations and professional responsibilities. Research Methods in Psychology equips students with the knowledge and techniques needed for rigorous data collection, analysis, and interpretation within forensic and psychological contexts. Forensic Risk Assessment and Management provides specialist training in evaluating and managing risk, covering assessment tools, intervention strategies, and decision-making frameworks used in real-world practice. The Independent Research Project allows students to undertake an in-depth investigation into a chosen topic within forensic psychology and mental health, applying research skills to produce a substantial piece of work. Together, these modules ensure graduates are well-prepared for careers in prisons, secure hospitals, probation services, and community-based interventions, as well as for further study or professional development in forensic and clinical psychology.
