COURSE CURRICULUM
This engineering program is designed to equip students with a forward-thinking, practical and comprehensive skill set for tackling today’s complex industrial challenges. The course centres on five core themes: systems engineering, generative design, innovation, sustainability, and manufacturing systems. Students begin by learning how to take a systems-thinking approach, which is vital when analysing, designing, and managing large-scale engineering systems. Through modules such as Systems Engineering, students work collaboratively on complex real-world projects, applying concepts of model-based systems engineering and gaining experience in requirements analysis, systems architecture, and project management. In the Generative Design module, students explore how design can evolve through algorithmic processes using advanced CAD tools, mastering techniques for parametric and generative design that push the boundaries of traditional design processes. Creativity and innovation are key aspects of the program, with students encouraged to take calculated risks and experiment with new ideas and approaches. A strong emphasis is placed on sustainability, addressed in the Design for Sustainability module, where students are taught to consider ecological, social, and economic dimensions when creating design solutions. They are trained to apply whole-systems perspectives and evaluate unsustainability issues across different contexts, preparing them to be proactive agents of change. In Design for Manufacturing, students explore the full design cycle, including advanced subtractive and additive manufacturing techniques, materials selection, and reverse engineering. This module equips them with the knowledge to optimise manufacturing processes using modern tools such as CNC and metal fused filament fabrication, supported by an in-depth understanding of material properties. The course culminates in a 60-credit Individual Project, where students draw upon all their previous learning to develop and implement a technical solution to a significant engineering problem, typically with a real industrial or research-based context. The program as a whole prepares students to become skilled, innovative, and sustainability-conscious engineers capable of leading in a rapidly evolving global industry.
