COURSE CURRICULUM

This course is designed to provide a robust foundation in laboratory science while allowing students to specialise in areas aligned with their career goals through defined routes. Core modules include Theoretical Principles for Laboratory Scientists and Laboratory and Data Analysis Skills, each worth 30 credits. These modules equip students with an understanding of laboratory standards, safety regulations, and ethical considerations, as well as key skills in data handling, analytics, and laboratory techniques. Both modules incorporate ICDL certifications in Data Analytics and Big Data, offering practical digital credentials upon completion. A 60-credit Research Project allows students to apply their knowledge in an independent investigation, fostering expertise in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication under expert supervision. Students who secure a placement during their first semester can opt for a professional placement year, offering industry exposure and real-world experience. The placement is student-sourced and must be approved by the university, with guidance available from the careers and employability team. This experience is assessed through a reflective diary that integrates practical learning with academic development. The course offers three distinct routes for specialisation. The Molecular Biology route includes modules on Advances in Molecular Biology and Molecular Basis of Human Disease, focusing on gene regulation, omics, and disease mechanisms. The Industrial and Environmental route explores sustainable production through modules in Industrial Biotechnology and Environmental Biotechnology, covering bioprocessing, biosensors, and environmental applications such as bioremediation and carbon sequestration. The Vaccinology and Immunotherapy route offers modules on Advanced Topics in Vaccinology and Immunotherapy and Human and Animal Vaccines, covering vaccine design, immunotherapies, mucosal immunity, and lab-based assessments of immune responses. Across all routes, students gain hands-on experience, theoretical insight, and valuable practical skills tailored to their chosen field. This multidisciplinary and application-focused approach ensures graduates are well-prepared for scientific careers in academia, industry, healthcare, or further specialised study.
