COURSE CURRICULUM

This course is designed to equip students with the scientific expertise and practical skills required for professional roles in laboratory-based biomedical and clinical sciences. All students begin with core modules that build foundational knowledge in laboratory operations, regulatory standards, health and safety, data ethics, and digital literacy. The Theoretical Principles for Laboratory Scientists module introduces essential concepts such as ISO standards, ethical data handling, and the growing influence of big data. Complementing this is the Laboratory and Data Analysis Skills module, which emphasises practical laboratory techniques, theoretical understanding, and data interpretation using digital tools. Both modules incorporate International Certificate of Digital Literacy (ICDL) content, with certificates awarded upon completion. The Research Project module, which carries the highest credit weighting, allows students to conduct independent research under expert supervision, applying theoretical knowledge and technical skills to investigate a specific topic. Students then specialise in one of four routes. The Cellular and Molecular Pathology route explores disease diagnostics through pathology techniques, including histopathology and molecular evaluations, while considering lab management and global health implications. The Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology route investigates biochemical and immunological methods used in disease diagnosis, including allergy testing and toxicology, with a focus on quality systems in medical labs. The Haematology and Blood Transfusion Sciences route covers blood disorders, haemostasis, and safe transfusion practices, including advanced diagnostics and molecular testing. The Infection Science route examines pathogens, infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and diagnostics within infection control. A shared module across all routes, Genomic and Regenerative Medicine, explores how advances in genomics and stem cell biology are transforming personalised medicine and the diagnosis and treatment of inherited and complex diseases. Throughout the course, students engage in applied learning, research, and professional development, preparing them for roles in clinical laboratories, scientific research, or postgraduate study in a healthcare or academic setting.
