COURSE CURRICULUM
This master’s course provides advanced training in key areas of engineering with a strong focus on real-world applications, modern simulation tools, and emerging technologies. It includes four 30-credit taught modules, each targeting a critical engineering domain. In Power Systems and Thermofluid Engineering, students gain practical skills using advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools such as STARCCM+ and ANSYS to model and simulate fluid dynamics within industrial systems, especially those focused on sustainability and power generation. Generative Design introduces systems engineering methods for managing complex projects, enabling students to create optimised 3D models using CAD software and parametric design techniques. Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies explores the properties and uses of innovative materials such as composites and nanomaterials, alongside cutting-edge manufacturing methods like additive manufacturing and automated production. The Structural Integrity and Dynamic Behaviour module focuses on the strength and stability of structures under stress, using tools like nonlinear finite element analysis and dynamic response modelling to analyse vibrations, impacts, and load conditions. All four modules combine theoretical knowledge with practical case studies and industrial applications. Students also complete a 60-credit Individual Project, applying their cumulative learning to solve a substantial engineering challenge—typically a research-based or industry-aligned problem. An optional professional placement year is available to students who secure relevant roles during the first semester. This provides a valuable opportunity to apply skills in a real-world context while reflecting on the experience through a structured learning diary. The placement is designed to enhance employability and deepen understanding of industry practices, though it is subject to availability, university approval, and additional costs. Altogether, the course equips students with the technical, project management, and problem-solving skills necessary for advanced roles in engineering, with an emphasis on innovation, sustainability, and industry relevance.
