COURSE CURRICULUM

The Social Work program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of both the theoretical and practical aspects of social work. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge through modules that cover the evolution of social work, legal and policy frameworks, communication skills, human development, and theories and methods in social work practice. Key areas include the impact of inequality and oppression on human development, the role of social work with children, young people, families, and adults, and preparation for placements through readiness for practice. Critical reflective practice is emphasized, ensuring that students can apply theory to real-life situations and engage with service users and professionals effectively. The second year builds on these foundational skills with practical experience through placements, where students are expected to apply social science knowledge, social work theory, and legislative frameworks. Modules focus on the development of professional practice and leadership skills, particularly in complex practice settings. There is a strong emphasis on critical reflection, safeguarding, and working within multi-agency and inter-professional settings. For students taking the Master’s level courses, modules in leadership and change management, as well as research methods and a professional practice dissertation, provide opportunities for advanced study and application. These modules equip students with the skills to manage organizational change creatively and use research to inform social work practice. Overall, the program prepares students to meet the professional standards required for social work practice and to engage in critical thinking, reflective practice, and leadership within a wide range of social work settings.
