COURSE CURRICULUM
In your final year, the course offers a series of thought-provoking and globally relevant modules designed to deepen your understanding of history, politics, and international relations while sharpening your critical thinking and research skills. You will explore the multifaceted role of conflict in shaping societies through War and Society, where you’ll examine how warfare not only influences the battlefield but also transforms societal structures, labour, gender roles, and cultural norms. Thinking Critically about the Past (and the Future) challenges you to connect historical study with contemporary issues like climate change and decolonisation, highlighting how our interpretation of the past shapes our present and future. Cultural Heritage and Public History offers insight into how history is remembered and represented in public spaces, with an emphasis on contested and marginalised narratives. In Global Affairs in Action, you will investigate international security, conflict, and rebellion, comparing policy responses and understanding their implications for both theory and practice in global affairs. Global Slavery, Historic Memory delves into the systems of slavery across different regions, exploring how they operated and were resisted, and how their legacies continue to shape societies today. Finally, Fighting Injustice in the International System looks at modern threats to democracy and human rights, from unfree labour to authoritarianism, examining how institutions can be defended and injustices challenged. Each module not only builds on your previous learning but also prepares you for practical applications in the world beyond university, whether in policy, heritage, international development, or advocacy. By the end of this year, you will have developed a sophisticated, critical and globally aware perspective, capable of addressing complex problems with informed, ethical insight.
