COURSE CURRICULUM

The course modules explore a range of critical issues in criminal justice, offering a comprehensive understanding of contemporary problems. The Governance and Criminal Justice module examines the collaboration of key criminal justice agencies like the police, courts, probation services, and prisons, focusing on power dynamics, risk management, legitimacy, and the concept of peace and security. The Real World Research module introduces various research methods used to study global social issues, including inequality, crime, and deviance, and provides students with the opportunity to engage with contemporary research through case studies and expert guest lectures. The Identity, Crime, and Justice module investigates how factors like gender, ethnicity, and disability affect experiences of crime and justice, using criminological theory to analyze the role of language in policing and court proceedings. Violence, Victims, and Trauma focuses on the effects of serious violence on both offenders and victims, exploring the long-term impact of trauma on those involved in the criminal justice system. The Transnational Crime and Law Enforcement module addresses how serious crime transcends national borders, analyzing global crimes like human trafficking and organized crime. This module also develops critical thinking and introduces international legal frameworks designed to address cross-border crime. Lastly, the Drugs, Crime, and Harm module examines the landscape of drug use and international drug policy, with a focus on issues like drug trafficking, county lines, and the risks associated with atypical drug use at events such as music festivals. Throughout these modules, students will gain a deeper understanding of the complexities within the criminal justice system and learn how to critically evaluate and address real-world challenges.
