COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Sport Performance and Coaching degree is designed to develop the practical and theoretical skills necessary for careers in sport coaching, strength and conditioning, and performance enhancement. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational knowledge in areas such as performance analysis, physiological assessment, nutrition, and coaching techniques. Modules include Foundations of Sports Performance, Human Movement and Physiology, Nutrition for Sport Performance, and The Developing Coach. These aim to build an understanding of the scientific and practical principles that underpin effective performance and coaching. Students who complete this year are eligible for an HNC. In the second year, the focus shifts to a deeper exploration of coaching methods and interdisciplinary performance strategies. Modules such as Principles of Strength and Conditioning, Practical Coaching, Maximising Sport Performance, and Research Methods provide a blend of practical experience and academic inquiry. Students are introduced to the design and analysis of training programs, data interpretation, and reflective coaching practices in both individual and team sport settings. Completion of this stage awards an HND. The final year prepares students for working in high-performance environments, addressing the needs of specific populations, and developing advanced coaching plans. Modules include Coaching in the High-Performance Environment, Applied Strength and Conditioning, Exercise for Specific Populations, and a Research Project. These modules allow students to apply knowledge to real-world scenarios and critically evaluate their own practice using evidence-based approaches. The research project enables students to investigate a topic of interest using secondary research, linking theory and practice while demonstrating independence, organisation, and ethical awareness. Overall, the program offers a comprehensive pathway into sport and performance-related careers, supported by practical experience and scientific research, with a focus on maximising athletic potential and adapting coaching to a range of performance contexts.
