COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Psychology, students share a common curriculum with other psychology-related courses, offering a broad introduction to key psychological concepts and research methods. This collaborative learning model promotes interdisciplinary understanding and allows flexibility in choosing a specialisation later. Core modules like “Fundamental Concepts in Psychology” and “Psychology of Mental Health and Wellbeing” establish foundational knowledge of human behaviour and mental health across contexts. Students are also introduced to both qualitative and quantitative research methods, gaining vital skills in designing and conducting psychological research. Additional modules such as “Psychology and Popular Culture” and “Professional Practice in Psychology” enhance students’ awareness of how psychological principles apply in everyday life and help them develop essential academic and professional competencies. In the second year, the course shifts focus to specialist content in sport and exercise psychology. Modules such as “Core Psychological Perspectives in Sport and Exercise” and “Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology” provide in-depth exploration of how theories in cognitive, biological, and social psychology relate to athletic performance, motivation, and wellbeing. Students also examine identity and inclusion in “Psychology of Culture, Gender and Sexuality in Sport and Exercise,” developing a nuanced understanding of diversity in sport. “Multiagency Sport and Exercise Psychology” encourages students to apply psychological principles across broader performance domains like health, coaching, and education. In preparation for final-year research, the “Research Methods and Project Planning” module develops students' skills in experimental design and statistical analysis. The final year allows students to consolidate their learning through an independent research project guided by an academic supervisor. Modules such as “Project Design and Ethics” and the “Independent Research Project” nurture critical thinking, project management, and ethical research practices. The year culminates in “Becoming a Sport and Exercise Psychologist,” which equips students with key professional skills, preparing them for careers in applied psychology, sports coaching, or further postgraduate study.
