COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the BSc (Hons) in Software Engineering, students are introduced to the essential skills and concepts that form the bedrock of computer science. The curriculum emphasizes both the technical foundations—such as programming, algorithms, and computer systems—and the professional skills needed in the tech industry, including ethical considerations and collaborative teamwork. Through modules like “Programming: Concepts and Algorithms” and “Computer Systems,” students begin learning how computers function and how to program them effectively. “Working with Data” and “Mathematical Skills for Computing Professionals” further enhance students' understanding of data management and the mathematical logic underpinning algorithms. The year continues with “Programming: Professional Practice,” which expands on object-oriented programming concepts, and culminates with an “Integrative Project,” offering a hands-on team-based experience where students put their learning into practice. In the second year, the focus shifts toward more complex systems and specialised knowledge, with modules like “Web Development,” “Advanced Algorithms,” and “Software Engineering” building upon foundational skills. Students learn to design user-friendly systems in “People and Computing,” and handle large datasets in the “Data Science” module. “System Analysis and Design” helps bridge the gap between technical development and real-world business needs, encouraging collaboration and strategic thinking. By the final year, students are equipped to specialise in areas of interest. Key modules like “Web API Development,” “Security,” and “User Experience Design” offer insights into modern industry demands. Students choose between two project pathways: individual or group-based, each involving a significant research-led dissertation and the creation of a software artefact. These final projects allow students to demonstrate their accumulated knowledge, technical ability, and problem-solving skills. The course overall blends theoretical depth, practical application, and professional development, preparing graduates to thrive in a wide range of computing careers.
