COURSE CURRICULUM

This pharmacology course is structured over three years to provide a comprehensive foundation in biological sciences before progressing into advanced and specialist knowledge in drug discovery, therapeutics, and disease management. In the first year, students are introduced to a common curriculum shared with other bioscience degrees. This shared approach not only strengthens foundational knowledge across physiology, genetics, cell biology, and biochemistry but also encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and the development of essential laboratory and data analysis skills. Modules such as Human Physiology, Genetics and Evolution, and The Microbial World build a deep understanding of bodily systems, inheritance patterns, infection, and immunity. Laboratory modules like Applied Techniques in Biology and the use of software like R help students translate theory into practice. In the second year, the course shifts focus toward disease biology and pharmacological treatment, integrating subjects such as pathophysiology, immunology, and molecular biology. Students explore therapeutic mechanisms in detail, examine how disease alters normal cellular and systemic function, and gain hands-on experience in measuring drug effects and concentrations through modules like Essential Techniques for Pharmacologists. A mini-project offers a unique opportunity to simulate working within a pharmaceutical consultancy team, enhancing professional skills and real-world insight. The final year brings together knowledge and practical skills for deeper study into contemporary pharmacological issues and therapeutic innovation. Advanced modules include Drug Discovery, Toxicology, and Cancer Biology, reflecting real-world healthcare challenges and evolving therapeutic strategies. Cutting-edge areas like personalised medicine, immunotherapy, and future drug development are covered. Students also engage in a final-year Independent Project, where they conduct research aligned with their interests and career aspirations, applying their research design and data analysis training. This capstone experience, alongside a module focused on research design and enterprise, ensures graduates are well-prepared for scientific careers or postgraduate education, with strong skills in critical thinking, communication, and innovation.
