COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year, students are introduced to the foundational concepts of occupational therapy through six compulsory modules. The module An Occupational Perspective on Health and Wellbeing explores the nature of human occupation and its impact on health and wellbeing across the lifespan, with a focus on occupation as a human right. Mind, Body and Human Occupation provides a foundation in anatomy, physiology and psychology, linking them to everyday activities and occupational performance. Theoretical Foundations of Occupational Therapy introduces the key models and frameworks that underpin occupational therapy, while also developing digital fluency and collaboration skills. Placement 1: Foundations of Professional Practice allows students to begin applying their knowledge in a practice setting, emphasising ethics, collaboration and professional development. Becoming a Professional Practitioner aims to foster professionalism, collaboration and reflective practice. Evidence: Your Profession in a Global Context encourages students to engage critically with evidence and to consider their developing professional identity in a broader context.In the second year, students build on these foundations through five compulsory modules. Occupational Therapy: Enabling Performance and Participation focuses on applying theory and skills to practice, especially in building therapeutic relationships and delivering group interventions. Enabling Occupation with Communities and Populations looks at occupational therapy in community and global settings, emphasising cultural awareness and public health. Exploring the Complexity of Occupational Therapy helps students navigate complex clinical scenarios using theory, evidence and digital tools. Placement 2: Developing Professional Identity allows students to deepen their practice experience while developing their professional reasoning and interprofessional collaboration skills. Exploring Knowledge Through Curiosity introduces students to research and inquiry methods used in health and social care, preparing them for evidence-informed practice.In the final year, students complete five compulsory modules that prepare them for professional practice. Enhancing Employability for Occupational Therapy Practice supports students in reflecting on their personal and professional development and preparing for employment. Occupational Therapy Across Care Pathways and Settings explores specialised and emerging areas of practice and encourages innovation. Placement 3: Becoming an Autonomous Occupational Therapist provides an extended opportunity for students to demonstrate autonomy, professional judgement and sustainable practice. Leading for the Future as a Health and Care Professional focuses on leadership within health and social care, encouraging collaboration and reflective practice. The Evidence-based Practitioner: Professional Project supports students in conducting and communicating an independent study that applies research to improve practice. Throughout the course, students gain comprehensive skills in theory, practice, leadership, and research, ensuring they are well-prepared to enter the workforce as competent and reflective occupational therapists.
