COURSE CURRICULUM
The Mental Health Nursing course spans three years, offering a structured progression from foundational knowledge to autonomous professional practice. In Year 1, students are introduced to core principles of nursing, professionalism, and person-centred care. Modules focus on developing critical thinking, understanding global and social health influences, and learning the fundamentals of assessment, care delivery, and communication within diverse settings. Students also undertake two placements where they apply their learning under supervision, gradually gaining confidence and practical skills. Year 2 builds on this foundation by deepening students' understanding of therapeutic interventions specific to mental health care. The curriculum covers complex decision-making, risk assessment, safeguarding, and the use of both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Through academic modules and practical placements, students strengthen their holistic care abilities and begin to work more independently. A research module fosters inquiry and evidence-based practice, preparing students to critically engage with evolving clinical knowledge. In the final year, students take on leadership roles and coordinate care for individuals with complex mental health needs. The course supports the development of advanced communication, prioritisation, and delegation skills, essential for managing multidisciplinary care. Academic modules explore leadership in healthcare, professional development, and research application, culminating in a professional project that demonstrates independent study and critical analysis. Final placements are designed to transition students into fully autonomous practitioners. They learn to manage complex caseloads, lead teams, and provide safe, inclusive, and evidence-based care while preparing for registration. By the end of the course, graduates will be equipped with the clinical expertise, decision-making capacity, and leadership qualities needed to thrive as registered mental health nurses, capable of delivering compassionate and effective care in a variety of healthcare environments.
