COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of this mathematics program, students are introduced to core concepts shared across several related degree courses, providing a comprehensive foundation in the discipline. The shared curriculum covers a range of essential topics such as calculus, algebra, probability, statistics, mechanics, and programming. The Calculus module consolidates previous knowledge and introduces advanced concepts to prepare students for higher-level mathematical studies. Algebra develops students’ understanding of modern and linear algebra, with a focus on assumptions and proof. Programming 1 introduces coding skills necessary for mathematical software and simulations. The Probability and Statistics module lays the groundwork for statistical analysis, while Mechanics and Numerical Methods combines Newtonian mechanics with computational problem-solving techniques. The Mathematical Case Studies module encourages collaboration and creative thinking through real-world problem-solving projects that build communication and teamwork skills. In the second year, the focus deepens on both theoretical and applicable mathematics. Students study Further Calculus and Complex Analysis, where they apply advanced techniques to scalar and vector fields and explore the elegance of complex variables. Linear Algebra and Differential Equations continues from year one, delving into orthonormal bases, eigenvectors, and singular value decomposition. Groups and Rings introduces abstract algebra, including group theory, ring theory, and finite fields. Partial Differential Equations and Analytical Mechanics explores solution techniques and connects mechanics with variational calculus. Real Analysis emphasizes rigorous proof and develops logical thinking, while Linear Statistical Models expands knowledge of multiple regression, ANOVA, and statistical software tools commonly used in industry.The final year builds on this strong mathematical base with advanced modules and a significant research project. Students explore Number Theory and Cryptography, connecting pure theory with practical applications such as the RSA cryptosystem. In Advanced Topics in Mathematics, they study methods like asymptotic analysis and Green’s functions. Fluid Dynamics introduces students to incompressible fluid flow problems and the mathematical techniques used to solve them. The Project module allows students to conduct an in-depth investigation into a mathematical topic of their choice, encouraging independent research and enhancing communication, analysis, and presentation skills in preparation for professional or academic pathways.
