COURSE CURRICULUM

The Learning Disabilities Nursing course is a comprehensive three-year program designed to develop the essential knowledge, skills, and values required for professional nursing practice. In Year 1, students are introduced to core concepts such as professionalism, evidence-based practice, health assessment, and the wider influences on health and care. The modules emphasise reflection, diversity, inclusive care, and the development of therapeutic communication skills, all of which are applied through two practice placements. These placements allow students to begin delivering person-centred care and to develop confidence under supervision. Year 2 focuses on deepening clinical knowledge and critical thinking, particularly around therapeutic interventions and complex decision-making in learning disability contexts. Students explore the ethical, legal, and policy frameworks that shape care while continuing to build evidence-based practice through a research and inquiry-focused module. The year also includes two further placements, which help students gain greater independence in care delivery and prepare them for managing more complex patient needs. In the final year, students prepare for the transition into autonomous practice. Modules focus on coordinating complex care, leadership, and the application of evidence to enhance patient outcomes. A professional project allows students to conduct independent research on a topic of interest, strengthening their academic and clinical expertise. In addition, students complete career-focused preparation, ensuring they are ready to assume the responsibilities of a registered nurse. The final two placements are designed to consolidate all previously acquired knowledge, with students coordinating and eventually autonomously managing the care of individuals with complex needs. These placements also give students the opportunity to lead teams, supervise others, and demonstrate readiness for the challenges of modern nursing. Overall, this degree aims to shape competent, compassionate, and confident nursing professionals who are prepared to meet the diverse and evolving needs of individuals with learning disabilities.
