COURSE CURRICULUM

In your first year, you’ll join a common curriculum shared with students across related bioscience degrees such as Biomedical Science, Pharmacology, and Biological and Forensic Sciences. This collaborative environment encourages cross-disciplinary learning, allowing you to explore a wide range of subjects and build a broad scientific foundation. Core modules include topics like human physiology, genetics, cell communication, microbiology, and biomolecular structure. You'll also gain practical laboratory skills and become familiar with analytical tools such as R and Excel. In Applied Techniques in Biology, you'll examine the structure and function of genetic information and learn how to apply bioinformatics tools in real-life biological scenarios. Moving into the second year, your learning becomes more specialised, delving deeper into human health and disease. Modules explore topics like neurophysiology, human genetic diversity, immune system function, and how lifestyle and environmental changes impact health. You'll study both communicable and non-communicable diseases, as well as how microbes interact with the human body—either as pathogens or beneficial commensals. You’ll also continue developing your analytical and communication skills, preparing for more independent research. In your final year, you'll consolidate your learning with more advanced modules that address some of the most pressing global health issues. You’ll explore metabolic diseases, infectious disease challenges, ageing biology, and the growing field of personalised medicine. A dedicated module in Research Design will guide you through the preparation of your final Independent Project, where you’ll investigate a topic of your choice under academic supervision. Throughout the course, you’ll develop the scientific knowledge, practical expertise, and research acumen to pursue a wide range of bioscience careers. This progression through foundational knowledge to focused, real-world application ensures you graduate ready to enter the professional field or pursue further study with confidence and a strong, relevant skill set.
