COURSE CURRICULUM
In the first year of the Geography and Natural Hazards degree, you will study the fundamentals of both natural and human environments, focusing on the relationship between landscapes, environmental systems, and society. The course introduces the disaster management cycle and explores why some communities are more vulnerable to natural hazards than others. You’ll gain key research skills such as statistical analysis, lab work, and GIS.Modules include A Changing Environment, which explores global challenges and your role in addressing them; Dynamic Landscapes, which looks at geological and geomorphological processes through classroom learning and a UK-based field trip; and Research/Practical Toolkit, where you’ll develop research and digital skills. People and Place introduces human geography, while Global Environmental Issues focuses on the impacts of environmental change. Sustainable Environments allows you to apply the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a student-led project. In the second year, you’ll deepen your understanding of natural hazards and develop more advanced research skills. Climate Change explores causes, impacts, and responses to global warming. Applied GIS and Remote Sensing teaches data analysis and spatial presentation. Hydrometeorological Hazards and Geohazards cover events like floods, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions, focusing on causes, impacts, and monitoring. A compulsory international field trip supports the Fieldwork and Research Applications module. Sustainable Environments in Society looks at the real-world impact of SDG-related projects. In your final year, you’ll develop advanced skills and knowledge. Emerging Hazards examines newer threats like biological and chemical risks. You’ll complete an independent Research Dissertation and take part in another international field trip through the Global and Comparative Field Studies module, enhancing your critical thinking and fieldwork abilities. This degree prepares you for careers in disaster risk management, environmental consultancy, urban planning, or further study, combining theoretical understanding with real-world application.
