COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Forensic Investigation course, students gain a broad foundation in key areas such as criminal and civil law, investigative practice, forensic science, and forensic interviewing. The Criminal and Civil Law module provides an introduction to the legal system in England and Wales, focusing on the roles of courts and legal personnel, as well as essential legislation for investigators. The Investigative Practice module delves into basic investigative concepts, including the methods, processes, and management of formal investigations. Critical and Digital Communication aims to develop essential academic skills, preparing students for writing reports and presenting findings in both academic and professional contexts. Introduction to Forensic Science explores various forensic techniques through case studies, while Forensic Interviewing introduces the PEACE interview model for effective evidence gathering. The Data Collection and Presentation Skills module equips students with the tools to collect, analyze, and present data in digital formats.In the second year, the course builds upon foundational knowledge, focusing on more specialized topics like crime scene analysis, fraud investigation, and digital forensics. Modules like Research Methods and Spatial Reconstruction enhance students' analytical skills and their ability to visualize complex data. Forensic Crime Scene Analysis and Understanding Evidence further develop students' abilities to analyze evidence and evaluate its relevance in investigations. The Basic Digital Forensics module provides an introduction to digital investigation, including identifying and recovering digital evidence. Fraud Investigation explores various forms of fraud and the strategies involved in managing fraud investigations.In the final year, students consolidate their knowledge and prepare for professional work. The Advanced Forensic Crime Scene Analysis module teaches students to analyze and evaluate forensic evidence from a range of sources, while Specialist Inquiry introduces contemporary forensic issues and evolving investigative techniques. The Surveillance Studies module provides an understanding of the legal framework for covert surveillance, and Situational Analysis encourages creative and critical thinking about evidence gathering. The Individual Research Project offers the opportunity to undertake independent research in a specialized area of interest, allowing students to demonstrate their ability to manage and analyze forensic investigations independently. This final project prepares students to enter the world of work as self-directed learners in the forensic investigation field.
