COURSE CURRICULUM

The program provides a comprehensive understanding of disaster and emergency management, starting with foundational knowledge in the first year and progressing to advanced skills in the second and final years. In Year 1, students are introduced to global environmental issues, such as the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. This foundation is built upon with modules like Research/Practical Toolkit, Fundamentals of Disaster and Emergency Management, and Disaster Management Emergency Preparedness for Specialized Industries, which aim to develop skills in research, critical thinking, and sector-specific disaster management. The Project and Cost Management module introduces students to the basics of project and cost management, while Sustainable Environments explores how to apply the UN SDGs within the built and natural environment.In Year 2, students advance their understanding of risk and preparedness, urban design for resilient communities, and organizational resilience. Key modules include Fieldwork and Research Applications, which prepare students for their final year research projects, and Risk and Preparedness, which addresses managing interconnected challenges such as climate change and natural hazards. The Urban Design for Resilient Communities module focuses on sustainable urban planning, while Training, Testing, Exercising, and Simulation provides practical experience in emergency management training.In the final year, students deepen their expertise with modules like Building Resilient Communities, which explores recovery and reconstruction post-disaster, and Towards a Sustainable Future, which addresses navigating uncertainty and developing sustainable solutions. Ethics, Governance, and Resilience teaches students how to evaluate governance systems in emergencies, while Formulating, Evaluating, and Reshaping Professional Practice examines the complex systems required to manage crises. The Research Dissertation and Global and Comparative Field Studies modules allow students to apply their learning through independent research and fieldwork, culminating in the development of real-world solutions in disaster and emergency management.
