COURSE CURRICULUM
This course follows a common first year structure that brings together students from related disciplines, giving you the opportunity to explore a broad foundation in the built environment. You'll collaborate across multiple fields such as architectural design, surveying, project management, and property, while gaining exposure to the wider industry. By the end of year one, you may switch to another course within this shared group, provided you meet progression requirements. In year one, you’ll develop core skills in construction materials, surveying, spatial design, and project and cost management. The curriculum also emphasises sustainability, introducing you to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and encouraging you to consider how the construction industry contributes to global change. A strong focus is placed on communication, collaboration, and the professional context of your future career, helping you build both technical and transferable skills early on.The second year takes this further by developing your digital fluency, professional awareness, and global outlook. You’ll dive into more complex building technologies, environmental systems, and legal principles relevant to construction. You’ll also explore how to adapt existing buildings for new uses, assess defects in historical and modern properties, and engage in critical design thinking about the future of construction in the 22nd century. Sustainability is again at the heart of the curriculum, as you critically assess projects influenced by the UN SDGs and propose your own forward-looking solutions. In your final year, you will consolidate all your knowledge through applied modules and independent research. You’ll participate in an interdisciplinary group project that reflects real-world professional collaboration. Other modules focus on contract administration, heritage building preservation, and professional practice, preparing you for the complex demands of the industry. A major research dissertation allows you to explore an area of your interest in depth. Two practical surveying modules help you develop comprehensive real-world experience, guiding you through the stages of assessment, planning, feasibility studies, and reporting—all critical for a building surveyor’s role.Across all three years, there is a clear progression from foundational knowledge to specialist expertise and applied skills, supported by a strong focus on sustainability, innovation, and professional readiness for the future of the built environment.
