COURSE CURRICULUM
This course follows a common first year structure shared with several related bioscience degrees, allowing students to build a broad foundation in biological science. It fosters collaboration and cross-disciplinary learning among students in Biomedical Science, Biological and Forensic Sciences, Human Biosciences, and Pharmacology. The first year modules cover essential topics such as human physiology, genetics, biomolecular structure, cell communication, microbiology, and applied biological techniques. Students develop practical laboratory skills, data analysis using R, and an understanding of ethical issues in science. The second year delves deeper into biomedical topics, including the genetic basis of disease, immune responses, haematological disorders, metabolic conditions, and the cellular mechanisms behind disease processes. Professional practice skills are developed further, including lab techniques, teamwork, and communication, in preparation for placements or employment. In the final year, the course consolidates knowledge and applies it to real-world biomedical challenges. Students study advanced topics like medical microbiology, virology, cancer biology, clinical biochemistry, immunology, and haematology. A strong focus is placed on understanding diagnostics, disease mechanisms, and treatment strategies, with a broader perspective on public health and global issues such as antimicrobial resistance. Students also learn to design and manage research through the Research Design module, which prepares them for their Independent Project. This final project allows them to pursue a topic of personal or professional interest, working closely with a supervisor to produce original research. Across all years, students enhance their scientific, analytical, and professional skills, gaining experience in lab work, data interpretation, ethical research conduct, and communication. This comprehensive approach equips graduates with the expertise and practical experience needed for careers in biomedical science, research, healthcare, or further study in specialised scientific disciplines.
