COURSE CURRICULUM

This course provides an exciting journey through the world of biosciences and forensic sciences, offering a structured learning path from fundamental concepts to advanced applications, along with opportunities to specialize and build independent research skills.In the first year, you will join a shared cohort of students from related bioscience courses, giving you the chance to collaborate and gain a broad understanding of essential topics. The curriculum covers key areas including physiology, genetics, microbiology, molecular biology, and biochemistry. You will explore human physiology and its role in maintaining health, study the fundamentals of inheritance and evolution, and gain an introduction to analytical tools like R for data analysis. Modules such as Applied Techniques in Biology and The Microbial World allow you to apply theory to real-life scenarios, including crime scene investigations and understanding infectious agents. You will also start to develop the skills required for laboratory practice, scientific communication, and collaborative work.In the second year, you will build upon your foundational knowledge and begin to explore more complex subjects. The course deepens your understanding of forensic science, microbiology, genetic diversity, and neurophysiology. You will investigate how microorganisms contribute to health and disease, learn about immune system functions and dysfunctions, and understand the physiological basis of mental health conditions. The forensic modules introduce crime scene procedures, analysis of various types of evidence, and the impact of environmental factors on forensic investigations. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and ethical practice.The final year focuses on advanced topics and independent research. You will study global infectious disease challenges, the application of genomics to personalized medicine, and the complexities of forensic science in international contexts. Modules such as Crime Scene to Courtroom give you the opportunity to apply your knowledge to complex casework, simulate courtroom presentations, and develop professional communication skills. You will also undertake a major research project, allowing you to explore a subject of personal interest in depth, supported by an academic supervisor. This capstone experience ties together all your learning and prepares you for a career in biosciences, forensic science, healthcare, or further academic study.
