COURSE CURRICULUM
In the first year of the course, you will follow a common curriculum shared with students across several related disciplines including architectural technology, surveying, project and cost management, and real estate. This collaborative approach offers a broad foundation in core topics and allows you to explore various professional areas within the built environment. You will gain an understanding of construction materials and surveying in the Materials and Building Surveying module, which introduces you to the properties, performance and risks associated with materials such as concrete, timber, steel, glass and masonry. Construction Technology and Environmental Sciences focuses on low-rise buildings, linking technological principles with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In Spatial Design and Visual Communication, you will develop design skills and work collaboratively to deliver creative architectural and engineering solutions. The Professional Skills Development module provides insights into roles and responsibilities across the construction sector and helps build practical skills like CAD and cost estimation. Project and Cost Management introduces you to managing resources, cost appraisals and innovation within projects. Finally, Sustainable Environments guides you in developing a student-led project that addresses environmental challenges through the lens of sustainability. In your second year, you will build upon the technical, academic and professional skills introduced in year one. Construction Technology, Assembly and Environmental Systems explores modern construction practices including passive design, renewable energy systems and the impact of climate change. Law for Built Environment Professionals introduces the legal frameworks surrounding the construction industry. Adaptation Design and Building Pathology focuses on repurposing existing structures, while Urban Design for Resilient Communities teaches the social, historical and environmental aspects of urban development. Designing for the Twenty-second Century asks you to consider how today’s practices affect future generations and encourages forward-thinking solutions. Sustainable Environments in Society: Developing Solutions allows you to assess real-world projects and their impact on global goals. In your final year, the emphasis is on preparing you for professional practice. The Interdisciplinary Project gives you the chance to apply your skills in a group setting, reinforced by an international field trip that exposes you to global built environment challenges. Professional Practice and Contract Administration deepens your understanding of contract law and professional responsibilities. Advanced Architectural Design in Historic Contexts enhances your ability to design in sensitive historical environments while balancing conservation with modern needs. In the Research Dissertation, you will carry out a detailed investigation into a relevant area of interest, demonstrating your research skills and subject knowledge. Comprehensive Architectural Project: Design Development helps you to formulate a concept design backed by research and technical detailing, which leads into the final module, Comprehensive Architectural Project: Design Resolution. This is where you will present a complete and professional design solution, showcasing your ability to synthesise creative, technical and contextual aspects into a single architectural package.
