COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Applied Biosciences course offers a comprehensive education in key areas of biological science, preparing students for careers in healthcare, research, and biotechnology. It combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on lab experience, building practical skills and scientific understanding across three years.In year one, students explore foundational topics such as chemistry, microbiology, cell biology, and anatomy and physiology. Emphasis is placed on learning scientific terminology and developing essential lab techniques, including safe equipment use and scientific reporting. Successful completion of this year leads to an HNC in Applied Biosciences.Year two advances this foundation by covering more complex scientific principles. Students study thermodynamics, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics, and the mechanisms of infectious diseases. Modules such as Advanced Cell and Molecular Biology, Principles of Biochemistry, Advanced Microbiology, and Principles of Pathophysiology deepen understanding of the molecular basis of health and disease. This year also enhances academic writing, critical thinking, and data presentation skills. Completion results in an HND in Applied Biosciences.In the final year, students apply their knowledge to more specialised topics, including disease management, environmental biochemistry, and genetic technologies. Modules include Applications of Biochemistry, Analysis and Applications of Cell and Molecular Biology, and Applications of Pathophysiology. Students explore cutting-edge areas like regenerative medicine, stem cell therapy, and nanotechnology. The year culminates in an independent research project, allowing students to design and carry out their own lab or field-based investigation. This project demonstrates students’ ability to conduct scientific research, analyse findings, and present their results professionally.Graduates of this degree will be well-prepared for further study or employment in bioscience-related industries, with practical experience and a solid academic foundation in applied biosciences.
